Bayern Munich Willing To Include Javi Martinez In Bid to Sign Athletic Club’s Unai Núñez
The future of Unai Núñez is bleak. Although the 22-year-old wants to succeed at his boyhood club, he’s rarely seen the field over the past year and has refused to sign a contract renewal unless regular playing time is guaranteed. Several clubs across Europe have taken a special interest in the defender such as Arsenal and Everton, though Bayern Munich are the ones most serious about a potential transfer.
Following injuries to Lucas Hernández and Niklas Süle, the Germans are in need of a new center-back and have identified Núñez as their top target for the upcoming January transfer window. Bayern have already made contact with the Lezama product who has a release clause of just €30 million and is frustrated with situation at Athletic. The Basque giants know there is little they can do to stop Núñez from leaving if he wants to, but are determined to convince him to sign an improved contract.
While Núñez isn’t a starter at Athletic, he’s still a very important player with a bright future ahead. Losing the 22-year-old would be disappointing for the Lions, however there is a way that a move could benefit everyone involved.
Athletic haven’t been shy about their interest in bringing back Bayern’s Javi Martinez. The Basques were interested in signing the midfielder over the summer but were unable to do so due to the fact that the Germans had no desire to part ways with the 31-year-old. Much has changed since then. Martinez is no longer a serious part of the coach’s plans at Bayern and will be sold before the end of the summer when he will be entering the final year of his contract.
Bayern are well aware of Athletic’s desire to sign Javi Martinez and could use this as leverage in their bid to bring Núñez to Germany. According to a report from Ander Cotorro of Marca, Bayern are indeed willing to include Martinez as part of a deal for Núñez in the upcoming transfer window. Martinez is also said to be very interested in returning to San Mamés where he knows he will have playing time and can feel important again.
The report goes on to say that if a swap deal is reached, Martinez would sign a three-year contract with Athletic with options to extend it further. In addition, part of the midfielder’s wages in the first year would be paid by Bayern Munich. At this point there is no word on whether or not Athletic would demand monetary compensation as well or if they are even interested in this possible transfer at all.
For now, Athletic and Unai Núñez are still in the midst of contract negotiations with the Lions hopeful that they can convince the defender to sign an improved deal that will significantly raise his wages and release clause. If that doesn’t happen and it looks as though the 22-year-old wants to leave the club, the possibility of bringing back Javi Martinez could be a very good alternative. Of course, keeping Núñez and signing Martinez would be the best possible outcome.
