Ruben Azcona Still Waiting For His Chances With CD Basconia
Expectations have always been high for Ruben Azcona. The young striker shattered scoring records at the lower levels of Lezama, including 54 goals with Cadete A followed by 34 with Juvenil B, while always playing against older competition. Azcona was even called up to the Juvenil A team in the middle of the campaign two years ago due to his spectacular performances before being officially promoted to CD Basconia last year.
So far, the step up to Basconia hasn’t gone as expected. In his first season with the Basauritarras, while still just 17 years old, Azcona managed 7 goals in 28 appearances. Most of those matches saw Azcona coming off of the bench but it’s true that he played well when given the opportunity. This season the striker was expected to be one of the leaders in the team but that hasn’t been the case.
Interestingly, Azcona made his Bilbao Athletic debut this season before playing a single minute with Basconia. The young striker was called up for the opening game against Haro Deportivo due to injuries, but has only made six appearances for Basconia, three of those as a starter, with just 355 total minutes since then. Instead, manager Patxi Salinas has put his faith in other forwards such as newly promoted Josu Juste and Alex Ibarrondo as well as Jon Cabo and Javier Rudi.
The reasoning behind Azcona’s lack of chances isn’t clear, but it’s certainly concerning. Basconia haven’t scored more than one goal over their past four matches and Azcona hasn’t even featured in the last three. When given the opportunity, the 18-year-old has played well and shown the same quality and potential that have led many to believe that he could one day lead the attack at San Mamés.
Azcona has long been viewed as a potential successor to Aritz Aduriz which, in truth, is unfair pressure to put on such a young player. The most important thing right now is the striker’s development and that will only come with regular minutes. Basconia’s solution in front of goal continue to be an issue and the 18-year-old could be the perfect answer to take the team to the next level. For now, Ruben Azcona will keep waiting for his chances with CD Basconia.
