Joseba Etxeberria “We Want To Keep Improving, Even After A Match Like This”
Bilbao Athletic’s incredible form continued on Saturday as the Kumeak defeated Real Valladolid Promesas 4-1 at Lezama. It was the team’s 7th win from the last 8 games and saw them keep their place at the top of the table. After the match, manager Joseba Etxeberria was full of praise for his squad, saying that it was one of the best performances of the season.
“We faced a great team so the assessment is very positive. The last half hour of the first half was our best level of the season because we moved the ball well and created chances. It was more difficult in the second half and they had the opportunity to tie the score, but Zarraga’s goal killed the game. We remained the same and defended well. We want to keep improving, even after a match like this.”
Despite the dominant performance from Bilbao Athletic, Real Valladolid still created a few chances and nearly equalized at the start of the second half. “It’s normal for you to concede chances against a team like Valladolid so we are happy for the saves that Ezkieta made for us”, Etxeberria stated. “He transmits security because he’s a great goalkeeper. He’s improving a lot.”
Bilbao Athletic have now scored 28 goals through the opening 10 matches, the best figure in the entire Segunda B. Etxeberria highlighted the fact that several players are providing goals which has made the team even more dangerous.
“We’re very happy because there are many players contributing to the attack. We had clear chances with multiple players, which is good. At the beginning of the league we had two players in attack and now we have several more. We will continue to impose ourselves.”
Ewan Urain has been a perfect fit at striker since returning from injury. The 19-year-old has scored in both games he’s started and was fundamental in the win over Real Valladolid. Etxeberria explained that Urain has done well, but must continue improving in order to reach the first team.
“We had two specific strikers at the beginning and neither were available so Baqué played in the position which was not his own. Tascón is still injured and Ewan is taking steps to continue improving. He’s still young, from the 2000 generation, The requirement is going to be large. They are in the last step before the first team and the Primera isn’t unforgiving.”
Along with the big win, Beñat Prados also made his Bilbao Athletic debut when he replaced Oihan Sancet late in the second half. “Beñat is earning chances”, Etxeberria answered when asked about the midfielder’s progression. “He’s from the 2001 generation and is a prize for us.” The Kumeak will be back at Lezama on Sunday where they will host Logroñés who are currently level on points with Bilbao Athletic but sit second in the table due to goal differential.
