Unai Simón “We Had A Chance To Climb The Table And We Didn’t Take Advantage Of It”
While Athletic played well in Saturday’s trip to Madrid, the Lions couldn’t do enough to topple Atlético. The Colchoneros scored two goals to send the Basques back to Bilbao with a 2-0 loss, making it the fifth straight game without a victory. It was always going to be a challenging fixture and the result could see Gaizka Garitano’s side fall into the bottom half of the La Liga table.
“We had a chance to climb the table and we didn’t take advantage of it”, Unai Simón told AthleticTV after the game. “It was a good game with a lot of equality in the first half. Despite being hind at the break, we have out chances and we had chances to equalize. In the second half, especially after their second goal. there was a bit of disorder because we wanted to push up and try to score. In the end we weren’t able to do it.”
Despite the disappointing result, Simón is already looking ahead to the next match. Athletic will host struggling Espanyol at San Mamés on Wednesday and the goalkeeper wants to secure all three points to set things right.
“The good thing about all this is that on Wednesday we have another fight. It’s coming to us right away. We have to recover and give everything. The best thing after losing is having another chance as soon as possible. We will play at home and we will give our all. We hope this bad streak will be over.”
Unai López also lamented the defeat while recognizing that the Lions had opportunities throughout the match. “We are hurting because I think we played well but the three points escaped us”, said the midfielder. “The team is strong and we know that we will be better.”
Depending on the results around the league on Sunday, Athletic could drop into the bottom half of the table after the loss to Atlético. The Lions will now begin preparing for Wednesday’s match against Espanyol, but another fixture looms large with Athletic traveling to face Villarreal next weekend. Gaizka Garitano will be tasked with getting the rotation and selection right in order to keep pace in the race for Europe.
