Iker Muniain “It’s Vital That We Break This Negative Streak”
Iker Muniain made his 300th La Liga appearance on Saturday but the match wasn’t a cause for celebration. Athletic fell 2-0 to Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano, increasing the team’s winless streak to five straight games. Following the final whistle, the captain admitted that it was a very challenging fixture.
“We started the game well”, Muniain began, “but it’s true that Atlético’s first goal made things more difficult for us. After the break they put another one in and from there it was almost impossible. We lacked a little bit up top and they put it in another gear after the break.” The Basques managed to create more chances than in previous weeks but still struggled in front of goal.
“We are aware that we are in a negative dynamic and we have to look at things and make corrections”, the captain continued. “We have our next game at home and it’s vital that we break this negative streak.” Athletic will host bottom-table Espanyol where nothing short of a victory and taking all three points will be an acceptable result.
