Gaizka Garitano “When You Create Chances You Have To Score Goals”
After going four straight games without a victory Athletic knew it would be difficult to reverse their fortunes in Saturday’s match against Atlético Madrid. The Lions played very well at the Wanda Metropolitano but it wasn’t enough as they fell 2-0 to extend their winless streak. After the game, Gaizka Garitano admitted it was the team’s best performance away from home this season but the Basques are still lacking in the final third.
“We were very good until they scored the second goal. They generated very little to score two goals. Their second goal did a lot of damage and from there we weren’t well. The first half was our best away from home by far. We had the ball, pressed well, and had more control of the game. It was a shame that we weren’t better in those last meters.”
Garitano went on to praise his players for their performance, but lamented the lack of finishing in front of goal. Athletic are committed to winning games and must improving moving forward.
“The team played well, with a lot of personality, and we created chances. When you create chances you have to score goals, especially on this field because if not they will have their moments. What we want is to win every weekend and when we don’t do it we are screwed. It’s a shame because when it was scoreless we were very good but when you have chances you can’t leave them empty.”
Angel Correa was constant threat to the Athletic defense and played a role in both goals. “He’s a very mobile forward and we had problems with him”, Garitano analyzed. “When one player isn’t available another one appears. I think we were superior in the first half and should have scored. Their goalkeeper was very good.”
Before concluding his postgame press conference, Garitano was asked to explain the three substitutions in the second half. “We wanted a target man with Aduriz, crosses with Ibai, and more depth with De Marcos”, he answered immediately. Now Athletic will begin preparing for last-place Espanyol who will be visiting San Mamés on Wednesday.
