Beñat Sidelined For One Month With Grade II Ankle Sprain
There was a bit of confusion on Friday when Gaizka Garitano announced the squad list that would travel to Madrid for the match against Atlético. With the entire group supposedly available, Beñat was left out of the call. In total only four midfielders have traveled on Saturday, leaving many to ponder the reason for Beñat’s absence.
An answer was finally given on Saturday morning when Athletic provided a medical report. The club has announced that Beñat suffered a Grade II right ankle sprain during Friday’s training session at Lezama and will undergo further tests in the days ahead. Players are typically sidelined for roughly one month with this specific injury which was the case for Oscar De Marcos earlier in the season.
Beñat’s injury certainly comes at a difficult time with Athletic set to play three games in one week. With Dani García, Unai López, and Mikel San José the only deep midfielders available at the moments there’s a very good chance that Oihan Sancet could be brought back into the first team. Gaizka Garitano faces yet another challenging rotational issue, but for now the only focus is Saturday’s match at the Wanda Metropolitano.
