Ander Capa “It’s A Good Time To Ring The Bell Against A Great Opponent”
Athletic’s poor run of fun over the past month has been concerning. The Basques have gone four straight games without a victory, picking up just 2 points, and will now try to set things right on Saturday in a difficult match against Atlético Madrid. Getting a positive result at the Wanda Metropolitano will be a massive challenge but Ander Capa believes it will be a great opportunity.
“It’s not that we are anxious, but we want to win”, the right-back told Juanma Velasco during an interview with Marca. “The fans are also with us, but they want to see a good attitude and fight which is what we want to convey. It’s a good time to get a good result, to vindicate ourselves and ring the bell against a great opponent.”
The Lions may be confident and prepared for a tough game, but Capa still recognizes the difficult. Playing in Madrid will certainly give Atlético an advantage and Athletic will have to be at their very best.
“It will be a very difficult game for us against an opponent who defends very well and are organized on the field. Above all, they have good players like Morata, Costa, Saúl and many more. João Félix won’t play, which is a relief because he’s at a very good level and is giving the team a lot of quality, but they have other players. Their squad is full of great players.”
When asked about his individual performances this season, Capa admitted that he’s felt good for the most part. “I started quite strong and I hope my level hasn’t dropped”, he said. “The only thing I try is to put crosses in to the strikers so that they can score goals. When I see Gaizka (Garitano), I look at him and I know what he’s going to ask me and what he wants.”
In closing, Capa addressed the fact that Athletic and Atlético play very similar styles of football with a focus on defending first. “Some want to have the ball and take the initiative and others come up to press and you have to play more direct”, he shared. “Every game is different but we have to trust our way.” Garitano’s system has come under scrutiny following a string of poor results and the Lions will look to get their season back on track against a formidable opponent.
