Mikel San José recognizes it’s been a strange year for La Liga (AC)

Athletic are in a difficult time of the season having gone four straight games without a victory. Saturday’s trip to the Wanda Metropolitano won’t make things any better. The Lions know they will have to be at their best in order to get a result against Atlético Madrid and Mikel San José recently shared that the Basques have to stay true to their system in an interview with Iñaki Ugalde of Mundo Deportivo.

“We have to be very clear about our strengths. We are a team that’s very good at being organized, defending, and being strong and competitive. We have top players who can score. Every time Rulo touches the ball you know anything can happen. Willi, although he hasn’t scored as much, always generates chances. There are many ways to play. Gaizka opts to play the game more on the outside than inside and in the ends that’s what we are trying to do.”

San José has no doubts about the difficult of Saturday’s match. Atlético are one of the strongest teams in La Liga and will demand the best from the Zurigorri. That being said, both teams have struggled to create chances this season and the midfielder believes that this could be the perfect opportunity to put an end to the winless streak.

“This game will be complicated. Last year we played one of the best matches I can remember and we didn’t even get a draw. It’s also complicated knowing our numbers are very similar, goals for and against. They are having trouble creating, but not defending. They may be the best defensive team in the world. Although we’ve gone four games without winning, we are competing very well. We are in a situation that invites us to look up and win at the Wanda.”

The honeymoon has ended for Athletic who started the season in dynamic form before falling off over the past month. “It’s been a strange start”, San José said in reflection. “It seemed that at the beginning we had more complicated matches and we got the points. Now we’ve had fewer points. You have to be consistent in this league and compete one hundred percent every day because anyone can beat you.” Athletic are in need of a big win this weekend in what will prove to be one of the most pivotal games of the campaign.
