Bayern Munich’s title hopes have become increasingly more difficult due to injuries over the past few weeks. Center-back Lucas Hernandez recently suffered an ankle injury that will keep him sidelined for several weeks while Niklas Süle could miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. Options are limited for the Bavarians who could look to bring in a defender in the January transfer market.

Unsurprisingly, Bayern Munich are reportedly interested in signing Athletic’s Unai Núñez who currently has a release clause set at just €30 million. According to an exclusive report from German source SPOX, the Bundesliga giants have already contacted Núñez’s representatives to discuss a potential move in January.

It’s no secret that Núñez is unhappy with his situation at Athletic. The 22-year-old is currently sitting behind Yeray and Iñigo Martinez which has seen him make just three appearances so far this season. Athletic still view Núñez as a very important player and the two sides have been in contract renewal negotiations over the past few months with the Basques hoping to raise his release clause and wages, but playing time has become one of the defender’s demands before signing a new deal.

Unai Núñez has publicly stated that he wants to continue at Athletic, but always with the caveat of having more playing time. It’s been his dream to play at San Mamés since he joined Lezama as a seven year old, but if the situation doesn’t change it’s very possible that Núñez could accept an offer to leave with Arsenal, Everton, Barcelona, and others all linked with moves along with Bayern Munich.
