Yuri Berchiche Questionable For Atlético Match With Ongoing Shoulder Pain
The absence of Yuri Berchiche has been difficult for Athletic to overcome. After dislocating his shoulder in the loss to Valencia, the left-back has missed the last two games with Mikel Balenziaga unable to properly fill the void. Berchiche finally returned to training on Monday and has looked set to make his return this weekend against Atlético, but that’s no longer certain.
During the opening 15 minutes of Thursday’s training session at Lezama, the only time open to the media, Berchiche was seen grabbing his right shoulder multiple time in obvious discomfort. This just so happens to be the same shoulder that the 29-year-old injured last season and he could simply be dealing with lingering pain. Regardless, Berchiche was able to complete the entire session which suggests that he hasn’t been ruled out for Saturday’s trip to Madrid.
Berchiche’s availability may depend heavily on pain management and tolerance. However, Gaizka Garitano recently shared that the left-back is still having issues lifting his right arm above his waist. The player’s status is questionable at this point and Athletic will continue to monitor Berchiche on Friday before deciding whether or not he will travel with the team to the Wanda Metropolitano. If Berchiche is unable to play, Mikel Balenziaga would be expected to start once again.
