Real Madrid Reportedly Monitoring Unai Simón As A Possible Replacement For Thibaut Courtois

Unai Simón has established himself as one of La Liga’s top goalkeepers (AC)

Unai Simón has featured just 17 times for the Athletic first team, but he’s already established himself as the club’s starting goalkeeper. Composed with the ball at his feet and capable of making incredible saves, the 22-year-old has become of the best in La Liga at his position and was recently rewarded with an improved contract. Simón is living his childhood dream of playing for Athletic at San Mamés and, in the process, has apparently attracted interest from other clubs.

The terrific performances by Simón haven’t gone unnoticed and it won’t be long before he gets his first call to the Spain National Team. Natural, the Lezama product has caught the attention of other clubs with a report from Manuel Valcarce of El Desmarque Bizkaia, claiming that Real Madrid have been monitoring Simón as a possible replacement for Thibaut Courtois.

It’s no secret that Courtois’s move to Real Madrid hasn’t gone as expected. The Belgium international has struggled greatly, conceding 12 goals from 24 shots this season, and Zinedine Zidane is said to be losing patience. Interest in Simón wouldn’t be surprising, however no other media sources have reported that Real Madrid are in fact considering the 22-year-old.

Only time will tell whether or not Real Madrid are in fact monitoring Simón who currently has a €50 million release clause. At this point there doesn’t seem to be much corroboration to the story and Athletic have no concern about the future of the starlet. Unai Simón has made his childhood dream a reality and sources ensure that the goalkeeper has no interest in leaving Athletic Club.

  • Oh, get lost Real Madrid. It was bad enough with Kepa. Just get Keylor Navas back. He’s better than Courtois anyway. Or maybe get the fax machine repaired and try for De Gea again.

    • And if only Zidane knew someone who could play in goal. Someone he knew really, really well. A family member, perhaps.
