Yuri Berchiche And Ibai Gómez Return To Training Ahead Of Atlético Clash
Yuri Berchiche has been arguably one of the best left-backs in Europe this season and his absence has been challenging for Athletic. The 29-year-old suffered a dislocated shoulder in the recent loss to Valencia. Because of the international break, Berchiche only missed games against Celta Vigo and Real Valladolid and could make his return in one of the biggest fixtures of the season.
After working apart from the group over the past week, Berchiche was able to return to normal training on Monday at Lezama. The defender has fully recovered from his shoulder injury and will be evaluated over the coming days to determine if he will be cleared to play this weekend against Atlético Madrid.
The expectation is that Berchiche will be available this weekend, but he won’t be the only player returning from injury. Ibai Gómez has been sidelined for just over a week with a muscle injury and was back in the group on Monday as well. Having both players cleared for action will be a massive boost for Athletic in the games ahead.
Having gone four straight games without a win, the Lions are in danger of falling to the middle of the table. Athletic will travel to face Atlético Madrid on Saturday in what will be a pivotal game on the season. The returns of Yuri Berchiche and Ibai Gómez will certainly give the team a boost, but the fixture will still be one of the most difficult of the campaign.
