Mikel Balenziaga believes Athletic deserved more from the draw with Real Valladolid (AC)

Athletic’s hopes of putting an end to their three-game winless streak were shattered on Sunday. Despite dominating the match against Real Valladolid, the Lions conceded a late own goal which saw the game finish 1-1 at San Mamés. It was a disappointing result that saw Athletic remain outside of the European zone of the table.

“We have deserved more and I’m sure that victory will come soon”, Unai López said after the match. The midfielder assisted Athletic’s opening goal and put in a generally solid performance. “It’s true that I give Willi the pass, but then he did the good work. We all know that he has speed like an animal. He showed it again today. We have to work hard this week to get the three points in Madrid.” The Lions must now prepare to face Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday.

“The first 45 minutes we did very well”, Mikel Balenziaga told AthleticTV. “In the second half we lost control at some point, but they didn’t create many chances. It’s a shame we didn’t get the three points.” Balenziaga has started the last two games but Yuri Berchiche could make his return from a dislocated shoulder this weekend in what will be a pivotal game in Athletic’s season.
