Iker Muniain “We Deserved More”
Iker Muniain nearly won the game for Athletic on Sunday but saw his bending shot saved by Jordi Masip. It was a great play, though the Lions shouldn’t even have needed a late goal. Real Valladolid equalized minutes prior when Unai Simón parried a cross off of Iñigo Martinez and into the back of the net which effectively ripped two valuable points away from the Basques.
“The point does very little for us”, Muniain told reporters after the game. “We wanted to get all three at home, like every game. We deserved more for the chances and opportunities we created.” Athletic had dominated the match but only added one point by the final whistle.
“They barely created any danger”, Muniain continued when asked about Real Valladolid’s performance. “Of course they pushed forward, but they didn’t have many real chances. The goal was a deflection. We tried for the second goal but we couldn’t get it.”
Muniain was then asked about Masip’s spectacular save to deny the captain’s winner. “It was a good save”, he answered. “When the ball came off my boot I practically saw it inside the goal but goalkeepers can also make plays. You have to get up. I think the team played well, in some phases very well, and we were far superior to our opponent. You don’t have to be demoralized, you have to move forward.”
Athletic have now gone four games without a victory, picking up just two points, and will travel to face Atlético Madrid next weekend. The Lions are in desperate need of a victory and it will be up to Gaizka Garitano to prepare the team for a very difficult match away from home.
