Bilbao Athletic Winger Jon Morcillo Attracting Interest From Various Clubs In Europe
Jon Morcillo has been one of the revelations at Bilbao Athletic this season. Following his loan spell with Cultural Durango last year, the winger has become a key player for Joseba Etxeberria, scoring 4 goals through the opening 8 games of the campaign. Morcillo’s impressive form suggests that he could have a bright future ahead but has also attracted attention from other clubs.
According to a report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo, first division clubs from Spain and England have shown interest in signing Morcillo. The 21-year-old could leave Athletic this summer but the decision will ultimately be up to the Zurigorri.
Like most players at Lezama, Morcillo is currently playing on what is known as a “chained contract”. Simply put, this means that Athletic have the option to automatically renew the winger’s contract for two season by promoting him to the first team, However, if that doesn’t happen, Morcillo’s deal would expire in the summer as he’s in the final year of the contract.
The situation is very similar to that of Gaizka Larrazabal last year. In the end, Athletic chose to negotiate a full professional contract instead of simply activating the automatic renewal. Finding a place in the first team won’t be easy for Morcillo, but the 21-year-old will have every opportunity to prove himself this season and hopes to convince Athletic that he can have a future at San Mamés.
