Unai Núñez Changes Agent In The Midst Of Contract Negotiations With Athletic Club
The ongoing talks between Athletic and Unai Núñez regarding the player’s contract renewal have not yielded results. While the club has already submitted an offer that would have significantly raised the defender’s wages, along with his release clause, Núñez is more concerned with having regular playing time. Now, the 22-year-old has made a decision that will impact negotiations moving forward.
On Thursday it was revealed that Núñez has changed agents. For the past few years he has been represented by Félix Tainta of Gidotsports who also advises other Athletic players such as Iñaki Williams, Yeray, and Oihan Sancet. His new agency, Leaderbrock Sports, will now oversee the negotiations with Athletic as both sides hope to reach an agreement before the Christmas break.
Unai Núñez is still under contract through 2023 but his paltry €30 million release clause has made it a priority for Athletic to improve his current deal. Clubs such as Barcelona, Manchester City, Napoli, Arsenal, and Everton have all been linked with interest in the Lezama product with the transfer window opening again in January.
The defender has made it clear that his goal is to continue at his boyhood club, preferably for many years, but he also wants to play. Sitting behind Yeray and Iñigo Martinez has been a frustration situation and, for a renewal agreement to be reached, Athletic must convince Unai Núñez that he will have more opportunities moving forward. The two sides will continue negotiations over the coming weeks.
