Bilbao Athletic Eager To End 15 Year Winless Streak At Stadium Gal This Weekend
Bilbao Athletic are off to one of the best starts to the season in recent memory. With Joseba Etxeberria at the helm the Kumeak currently sit at the top of the table having earned 17 points from the opening 8 matches and are one of the favorites to qualify for the promotional playoffs. The team will have the chance to build on their lead this weekend, as well as the opportunity to put an end to a 15 year winless streak in Irun.
As Bilbao Athletic travel to face Real Unión on Saturday they will be looking for their first win at Stadium Gal since 2004. The Kumeak will be in a great position to end the poor run as they are in terrific form this season while Real Unión have won just one match at home and currently sit 14th in the table with 8 points. After last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Amorebieta the team is eager to get back to their winning ways but know this won’t be an easy fixture.
Etxeberria will have some big decisions to make in regards to the starting lineup. Oihan Sancet has missed the last two games due to being called up to the first team and international duty and could be back in the squad on Saturday. In addition, the defensive structure will also be an issue with Jon Sillero and Oier Luengo both options to start alongside Dani Vivian.
At first glance this is a match that Bilbao Athletic should be able to win. The Kumeak have scored 23 goals this season, more than any other club, while Real Unión have conceded 13 goals and have struggled for consistency. Still, there’s a reason why the team has struggled in this fixture in the past as Stadium Gal can be a very difficult atmosphere to overcome. It won’t be easy, but Bilbao Athletic have the quality and form to end the streak and, in turn, extend their run at the top of the table.
