Iago Herrerín Will Continue To Get Minutes In Goalkeeper Rotation
Unai Simón is the starting goalkeeper at Athletic, but Iago Herrerín will have chances as well. Fans were surprised to see Herrerín included in the starting lineup against Leganés a few weeks ago, though Gaizka Garitano explained that he wanted to reward the veteran who had been doing well in training. The start came in the middle of a week where the Lions played three matches in six days and that rotation will continue.
Garitano’s statements after the Leganés match made it clear that he would be rotating the goalkeepers during busy weeks. Herrerín will certainly be starting in Copa del Rey matches, which will begin on 18 December, but the 31-year-old will also have opportunities in other midweek fixtures. According to a recent report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, Herrerín is expected to start against either Espanyol or Villarreal in a few weeks when Athletic will once again play three games over the course of just a few days.
Regardless of who is in goal, Athletic have been one of the strongest defensive sides in Europe. The Lions have conceded just four goals through the opening eight games of the season and will need to continue that run if they are going to challenge for European qualification.
