Arsenal And Everton Join The List Of Clubs Interested In Signing Athletic Club Defender Unai Núñez
Unai Núñez’s future at San Mamés continues to be the biggest concern in Bilbao. Athletic have made it a priority to sign the starlet to an improved contract but recently saw their first renewal offer rejected after weeks of negotiations. The deal would have seen Núñez’s yearly wages raised to €1.8 million, though playing time is still the defender’s top priority. Meanwhile, other clubs are keeping a close eye on the situation.
Barcelona and Manchester City have both been linked with a move for the Lezama product over the past few months with Napoli reportedly identifying Núñez as a top candidate to replace Kalidou Koulibaly should he leave the club in the coming months.
However, they aren’t the only ones as several reports in England claim that Arsenal and Everton have also been monitoring Núñez. The clubs are said to be weighing up the idea of paying the defender’s €30 million release clause if a renewal agreement isn’t reached with Athletic.
Núñez has made it clear over the past few months that his goal is to continue at Athletic, although it’s always come with the caveat of having more consistent minutes. Renewal talks began in the summer with Athletic looking to significantly raise the starlet’s release clause which has quickly become a bargain for a player of such high quality and potential.
The two sides will continue negotiations over the coming weeks with the hope of reaching an agreement before the transfer window opens in January. There is optimism that a deal will eventually be reached, but for that to happen Athletic must first convince Unai Núñez that he will have more minutes moving forward. Until then, concern over the defender’s future will continue to grow.
