Mikel Vesga “We Are A Solid Team And The Last Two Results Aren’t Going To Destabilize Us”
Mikel Vesga made his season debut in Athletic’s 1-0 loss to Celta Vigo nearly two weeks ago after being a surprise inclusion to the starting lineup. Up until that point that 26-year-old had barely even been included in the squad and, despite the disappointing result, played well alongside Dani García. Vesga addressed the media following Tuesday’s training session and shared his excitement of being back in the team.
“Being back in the lineup is part of the adaption process”, he began. “It’s another idea and the system is much more demanding. I’m happy, calm, and working to my fullest. The most important thing is the team. We were disappointing to leave Vigo with nothing and will work to get more. We are a solid team and the last two results are not going to destabilize us.”
After spending last year on loan with Leganés, Vesga made it clear that his goal has always been to succeed at Athletic. The midfielder hopes to get more chances going forward and the opportunity to prove he deserves a place in the team.
“It took a while to play my best at Leganés and then it went well. It’s clear that everyone wants to play as soon as possible. After leaving on loan I wanted to show that I can be here. I want to be here, to be at Athletic. Obviously it’s not easy because of the level that’s required but my idea has always been to stay here, to keep growing as a player, and help the team.”
Understandably, it hasn’t been easy for Vesga to have opportunities. “Ever since I came up from Bilbao Athletic I had to share a position with players like Itu, Rico, and others who have a lot of quality and have been with the National Team”, explained the midfielder. “Playing the other day was motivation for me, but I know this will be a process.”
When asked if he was surprised to be included in the lineup, Vesga admitted that he was on some level but that he had been working all season for a chance. “Well, maybe because it was the first time this season, so yes I was partly surprised. But you have to be prepared for those moments and I think I was. I had been working for the opportunity.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s match against Real Valladolid, Vesga shared that he hasn’t seen much of the Pucela but knows that they will be a strong opponent. Athletic are expecting a difficult match and must be at their best to get a good result.
“I haven’t seen much of Valladolid, but I think I have seen some data that says they score more goals or get more points away from home and that says a lot about a team. The base of their team has been maintained and that’s good for a club. They will make things difficult for us and we have to be very well prepared.”
Mikel Vesga isn’t expected to start against Real Valladolid with Dani García and Unai López being Gaizka Garitano’s trusted pair, but the 26-year-old could get more chances as the season progresses. With just one year left on his contract, Vesga is fully aware that he must prove that he contribute to the team right now and that he deserves an extension moving forward.
