Yuri Berchiche In A Race To Return For Real Valladolid Clash

Yuri Berchiche hopes to be cleared to play this weekend (AC)

The international break will be coming to an end this week and Athletic are already preparing for Sunday’s match against Real Valladolid. The Pucela will visit San Mamés looking to build on their recent success as the Lions hope to put an end to their three-game winless streak.

For the most part, Athletic have been lucky to avoid any serious injuries this season. Oscar De Marcos did miss over a month with an ankle sprain, but Gaizka Garitano didn’t really have a problem compensating for the absence. However, Yuri Berchiche recently suffered a dislocated right shoulder in a loss to Valencia and filling the gap left by the left-back has been challenging.

Initial diagnosis suggested that Berchiche would miss at least one month of action, but his recovery has gone quicker than expected. The 29-year-old was already doing work with the ball last week and was seen doing the same in Monday’s training session at Lezama. If Berchiche is able to rejoin his teammates there is a chance that he could be available for Sunday’s match.

The training session focused heavily on keeping possession and creating chances with Garitano breaking the squad into two separate teams for scrimmages. Ander Capa, Yeray, Dani Vivian, Cristian Ganea, Unai López, Mikel Vesga, Ibai Gómez, Raúl García, Iker Muniain, Iñaki Williams and Kenan Kodro made up the first team with the second consisting of Iñigo Lekue, Unai Núñez, Mikel San José, Mikel Balenziaga, Dani García, Beñat, Oscar De Marcos, Gaizka Larrazabal, Iñigo Córdoba, Asier Villalibre and Aritz Aduriz.

Gorka Guruzeta, who is recovering from ACL surgery, was able to jump into both teams at times while the goalkeepers worked with coach Aitor Iru apart from the group. Iñigo Martinez and Oihan Sancet were absent due to serving on international duty but the rest of the team will be back in training on Tuesday for two separate sessions accompanied by a player press conference.
