Athletic Reportedly Rule Out January Signing Of Ruben Pardo
After 14 years with Real Sociedad, Ruben Pardo will be leaving the club in the coming months. The midfielder joined Zubieta at the age of 12 and went on to feature in over 200 matches but will not be signing a renewal with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. Still just 26-years-old, Pardo has a lot of football left to play and recent reports suggest he will be moving to San Mamés.
With Real Sociedad already allowing Pardo to talk to other clubs, sources in Gipuzkoa have reported that the midfielder is close to finalizing a contract with Athletic. In fact, the reports went as far to say that it’s being taken for granted that Pardo will sign with the Zurigorri and that Athletic are even weighing up trying to sign the player in the January transfer window.
The story is quite different in Bizkaia. Javier Beltrán of AS has since reported that there has been no formal contact from Athletic and that the Lions have ruled out any attempt to sign Pardo in January. Instead, three other clubs from La Liga and one from abroad have reached out to the player. While there’s always a possibility that Athletic could pursue Pardo once his contract expires, there has been no interest in signing the Real Sociedad midfielder to this point.
It’s true that Athletic are in need of revitalization in the midfield. Mikel San José and Beñat are both in the final year of their contract and must prove that they deserve a renewal while starlets such as Oihan Sancet and Unai Vencedor are already showing that they are ready to come into the first team. Athletic are also interested in trying to bring back Javi Martinez next summer but for now reliable sources claim there’s been no move to sign Ruben Pardo.
