Unai Núñez Rejects First Renewal Offer From Athletic Club
Unai Núñez’s contract status is in limbo. Athletic have made it the club’s top priority to sign the 22-year-old to an improved deal that will significantly raise his €30 million release clause and ensure his future at San Mamés, but Núñez is most concerned with having opportunities to play. The defender barely featured last year and wants more opportunities moving forward.
Athletic recently submitted their first official renewal offer which was rejected by Núñez according to a report from Robert Basic of El Correo. The deal is said to have included a yearly wage of €1.8 million but the player’s biggest priority is playing time. Núñez and Athletic are set to meet again soon to continue negotiations with both sides wanting to get a deal done.
Despite his lack of chances, Núñez has already proven that he’s one of the best young defenders in Europe. Other clubs are keeping a very close eye on the Lezama product, including Arsenal, which is part of the reason why Athletic want to raise his current release clause which is far too low. For that to happen, the Basque giants will also have to pay wages that match a high release clause, though playing time will continue to be the biggest issue in negotiations.
Unai Núñez has publicly shared his desire to continue at Athletic, his boyhood club, but also with the caveat of being able to play. Both the player and the club are hopeful and confident that an agreement will eventually be reached even though the two sides are still far apart. As negotiations continue, Núñez will now wait for Athletic’s next renewal offer with his current deal set to expire in 2023.
