With the way the Segunda B groups are broken up, Bilbao Athletic play several other Basque clubs throughout the season. In fact, the majority of teams in Group 2 are from the Basque Country which makes for an interesting campaign. Considering the fact that many of these clubs have had players make the move to Lezama the matches are always special and that will certainly be the case for three Katxorros this weekend.

Iñigo Baqué, Andoni Tascón, and Oier Luego have all spent time at Amorebieta. The first two enjoyed a season on loan, Baqué in 2016/2017 and Tascón last year, while Luengo was formed at the Amorebieta academy before joining Bilbao Athletic two years ago. The trio will have the opportunity to face their former club this weekend as Amorebieta will be visiting Lezama.

“It was very difficult to go out there, but taking stock over the years, I think it was a very positive thing for me”, Baqué told AthleticTV as he reflected on his year with Amorebieta. “I left very happy with the experience.” After spending two consecutive years with CD Basconia, Baqué featured in 36 matches for Amorebieta before returning to Bilbao Athletic where he has become an important player.

Tascón also had a very success spell at Amorebieta where he spent all of last season after being promoted from Basconia. The young striker made 36 appearances and score 10 goals which earned him a place in the Bilbao Athletic squad this year. “It will surely be a complicated game”, he said looking forward to this weekend. “Amorebieta is a team that hasn’t started badly despite having many new faces. They are a good team.”

Joseba Etxeberria Amorebieta

For Luengo, facing Amorebieta will always be significant. The defender was developed at the club’s academy and made 44 appearances for the first team over two seasons before joining Bilbao Athletic last year. After struggling for minutes, Luengo then returned to Amorebieta on loan where he played 18 more games. Things have been different for Luengo this season with the 21-year-old starting the last three matches and scoring the winning goal against Arenas Club last weekend.

This match will also be special for Bilbao Athletic manager Joseba Etxeberria. The Athletic legend coached Amorebieta in 2017 where he guided the team to a very strong start to the season before leaving to take over at Tenerife in February of 2018. “It’s a special game because of the relationships, but we are going with the idea of playing well and winning”, Etxeberria recently said when asked about the upcoming fixture.

Athletic have a rich and deep relationship with Amorebieta with the Lions regularly sending players on loan to the Campo Municipal de Urritxe. However, the only thing that will matter on Saturday is the match. Bilbao Athletic will be looking to take all three points at Lezama and keep their place at the top of the league table. Amorebieta come into the match having earned 9 points from the opening 7 matches but have yet to win a game away from home.
