Yuri Berchiche Could Make Early Return From Shoulder Injury
Yuri Berchiche suffered a dislocated shoulder over a week ago in Athletic’s 1-0 loss to Valencia at San Mamés. The defender had challenged for a header before taking an awkward fall and was in clear pain as he had to be stretchered off the field. Initial diagnosis suggested that Berchiche would miss roughly one month of action but he’s determined to shorten that absence.
The Lions returned to training on Monday and Berchiche was already seen doing work with the ball including taking shots and crosses. This is usually the last step before a player is able to rejoin his teammates in sessions and sources claim that the 29-year-old could make an early return from his injury. With the next two weeks being the international break, there is a possibility that Berchiche may be back on the field for the team’s match against Real Valladolid on 20 October though it’s more likely that he will be ready for the following game against Atlético Madrid.
In other good news, Gorka Guruzeta was able to take another positive step forward in his recovery from ACL surgery. The forward joined the players who started in Sunday’s loss to Celta Vigo for a recovery session and spent the rest of training working with Xabier Clemente. Guruzeta is expected to be able to return to full training by November and his recovery has gone very well to this point.
The only player absent from the session was Iñigo Martinez who has been called up by the Spain National Team. Oihan Sancet will also be leaving the group soon after being summoned by Spain’s U21 squad. While the starters were put through a light session, assistant coach Juan Iribarren had the rest of the players scrimmaging in small groups on a shortened field. Join Ezkieta and Dani Vivian, who recently recovered from muscle discomfort, joined the session.
Athletic will return to action on 20 October as they host Real Valladolid at San Mamés for the ninth game of the La Liga season. However, the team will continue the tradition of staying active during the international break. The Lions will be participating in a friendly tournament on Thursday which will be hosted by Barakaldo and include Alavés. The three will play 45 minutes matches to crown a champion.
