Iñigo Martinez And Oihan Sancet Called Up For International Duty

Iñigo Martinez has once again been called up to the Spain National Team (RFEF)

The international breaks gives teams extended time to work on important things. For some clubs there are corrections to be made and strengths to reinforce while others benefit most just from being able to rest and recover. Fans are rarely happy to see club football paused, but it’s an important part of the season for player and coaches. However, those who are called up to their National Teams have other priorities.

Athletic defender Iñigo Martinez was summoned to the Spain team for the international break and was already excused from training on Monday to leave and join the Selection. Fellow center-backs Yeray and Unai Nuñez were also on the shortlist but didn’t make the final squad in the end.

Martinez isn’t the only Athletic player who will be serving on international duty. Due to Leganés’s Óscar Rodríguez having to withdraw from the group, Oihan Sancet has been called up to the Spain U21 squad. The Athletic starlet has previous represented Spain’s U19 and U18 teams but this will be his first time serving the U21s who will play a friendly against Germany on Thursday followed by a European qualifier against Montenegro the following Tuesday.

Athletic will continue to train without Iñigo Martinez and Oihan Sancet who will return to the group at the end of the international break. In the meantime, Athletic will be playing in a friendly tournament against Barakaldo and Alavés in order to build rhythm and work on areas that the team is trying to improve. Juvenil A starlet Nico Serrano has also been called up to Spain’s U17 team while several other Lezama standouts were summoned by Euskadi.
