Mikel Balenziaga “We Have To Analyze What We Did Wrong In These Previous Games”

Mikel Balenziaga made his season debut in the loss to Celta Vigo (EC)

Mikel Balenziaga made his season debut on Sunday, starting in place of Yuri Berchiche who has been sidelined after dislocating his shoulder. Balenziaga played well, but the team as a whole were unable to create enough chances as they fell 1-0 to Celta Vigo at Balaídos. It was Athletic’s second consecutive defeat of the season and doubts have started to set in.

We aren’t where we want to be after the two defeats”, Balenziaga said after the loss. “We wanted to continue near the top. We weren’t able to take advantage of any of our chances. We didn’t play our best game of the season and neither did they. We weren’t able to react to Celta’s goal because they demanded a lot from us.”

Despite the disappointing stretch of results, Balenziaga is still optimistic about the season. “There’s no reason for concern”, he quickly pointed out. “We have to analyze what we did wrong in these previous games. A week of tranquility is coming and we have to look to the next game.” Athletic will now have the international break to prepare for their next match.

On a personal level Balenziaga was pleased with his performance and stamina after going seven games without minutes. “I found myself very well physically. I was comfortable in the game and at ease. It’s too bad we didn’t win the game. I can’t assume anything about the next game. It’s the Mister who makes the decisions.” If Berchiche is still unable to play after the break Balenziaga will be expected to continue in his place.

Oscar De Marcos also made his return to the field after missing the last month with an ankle sprain. “When you lose is when you put more emphasis on mistakes and the areas that you can improve”, he answered when asked where the team will go from here. “We created very little in the final third. The match was decided by a set piece, as it usually is in La Liga.” Athletic will be back in action on 20 October when they welcome Real Valladolid to San Mamés.
