Iago Herrerín Leaves Training With Foot Discomfort
Athletic returned to training on Tuesday following the team’s first loss of the season over the weekend. The Lions fell 1-0 to Valencia at San Mamés on Saturday and were given two days off to recover from playing three games in six days. The first defeat had to come at some point and so does the first win away from home. Athletic will travel to Celta Vigo on Sunday where three points would put the Basques in great position heading into the international break.
After warming up as a group, Gaizka Garitano split the players into two teams which played scrimmages on the field at Lezama. The first team consisted of Iñigo Lekue, Uñai Nuñez, Iñigo Martinez, Mikel Balenziaga, Unai Lopez, Dani García, Oscar De Marcos, Oihan Sancet, Iñigo Cordoba, and Iñaki Williams while the second team was made up by Ander Capa, Yeray, Mikel San Jose, Cristian Ganea, Mikel Vesga, Beñat, Gaizka Larrazabal, Iker Muniain, Ibai Gomez, and Aritz Aduriz.
Mikel Vesga and Mikel San Jose switched places at some points while Kenan Kodro rotated with Cordoba and Asier Villalibre did the same with Aduriz. Raúl García only did conditioning work during the session. Garitano put a heavy focus on positioning and being direct with the ball, both of which will be important focuses against Celta Vigo this weekend.
At the end of training, Herrerín left the field and received attention from the medical staff for pain in his foot. It’s unknown whether or not the issue is serious but the goalkeeper was unable to continue the session and was taken back to the locker room. If Herrerín is unavailable for Sunday’s match Jokin Ezkieta could take his place as Unai Simón’s backup against Celta Vigo.
