Yuri Berchiche Sidelined For 3 Weeks With Dislocated Shoulder
It was clear that something was wrong when Yuri Berchiche fell awkwardly late in the second half of Athletic loss to Valencia. The left-back was challenging for a header when he landed on his right side and immediately screamed in pain. At first it seemed as though he had just had the wind knocked out, but teammates quickly motioned for the medical staff who rushed onto the pitch.
After a few minutes a stretcher was brought out and carried Berchiche off the field as Athletic finished the game with 10 players. The 29-year-old could be seen grabbing his right shoulder and after the match manager Gaizka Garitano gave an update on the defender. “Yuri has fractured his shoulder and is at the hospital”, he answered when asked about Berchiche’s condition.
Athletic later released a medical report confirming that Berchiche had been taken to the hospital immediately for further tests. The defender dislocated the same shoulder last year during a match with Rayo but there doesn’t appear to be any extensive damage found during initial tests. Javier Beltrán of AS has reported that Berchiche will be sidelined for three weeks while recovering, though the club has yet to provide an updated report.
If Berchiche is only out for three weeks he would likely miss just one game, next weekend’s trip to Celta Vigo. The international break will follow and the defender could make his return against Real Valladolid on 20 October if his recovery goes well. In the meantime, Garitano will choose between Mikel Balenziaga and Iñigo Lekue to replace Yuri Berchiche in the starting lineup.
