Yeray “Valencia Caught Us Out Of Position”

Yeray says Athletic just weren’t good enough against Valencia (AC)

Athletic have boasted one of the best defenses in Europe this season, but the past two have put the Lions to the test. Wednesday’s draw against Leganés saw Iago Herrerín beaten from a free kick followed by the first defeat of the campaign on Saturday where the Basques fell 1-0 to Valencia. There was no room for excuses after the loss.

“The truth is that they started much better, they dominated us, especially in the first half”, said Yeray after the match. “They attacked with many players and they caught us out of position. In the second half we tried to turn it around but we weren’t successful. We weren’t able to find spaces and that took its toll.”

Valencia had conceded 11 goals going into the weekend, more than any other club in La Liga, but managed to hold Athletic scoreless at San Mamés. “They were well organized at the back”, Yeray explained. “They knew our style of play perfectly, what we were going to do and how we wanted to use the wings. They prepared very well for the game.” Now Athletic will prepare for next weekend’s trip to Celta Vigo where the Zurigorri hope to win their first game away from him this year.
