Athletic suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday, falling 1-0 to Valencia at San Mamés. It was a disappointing result and poor performance from a team that has been consistently good all season, but the players aren’t making any excuses. The Lions know they played badly and are eager to get back on the right track against Celta Vigo next weekend.

“We had a bad start to the game, but I think we can be proud of the team’s effort in a week with three games”, Dani García told reporters after the match. Athletic played much better after giving up the goal but it wasn’t enough to turn around the result. “Now we have to recover because we expect to face another high quality opponent on Sunday. It will be important to improve what we did wrong against Valencia during the week of training.”

Iñaki Williams had the best chance to level the score when his point-blank shot was saved by the goalkeeper in the second half. “We were always fighting against the tide”, said the striker. “This competition is like that and the Primera is not forgiving. We weren’t as solid as we have been in defense and that took its toll. Tiredness or fatigue are not excuses because we are more than used to playing like this.”

A win would have seen the Basques back to the top of the table but instead they sit 6th and just one point off rivals Real Sociedad. The upcoming international break will help the team regroup before another difficult round of fixtures, but first Athletic will look to win their first match away from home on Sunday as they travel to Celta Vigo.
