Leganés 1-1 Athletic Club: Points Shared At Butarque

Raul Garcia Leganes Celebrate

Raúl García celebrates his goal against Leganés (AC)

Athletic were looking to pick up their first road win of the season on Wednesday as the Lions made the trip to Butarque. With Leganés sitting at the bottom of the La Liga table the Basques knew it would be a difficult match and that was certainly the case. The hosts were coming off of an impressive draw against Valencia and were eager to get the better of Gaizka Garitano’s side.

The first half was full of action, but no goals. Leganés regularly looked to send attacks through on goal but the Athletic defense did well to intercept passes and win challenges. Meanwhile, the hosts played with five defenders and didn’t give up any space for the Basques to attack into. Neither manager was satisfied with the first half performance and Garitano was the first to act, bringing on Iker Muniain immediately after the break.

Athletic enjoyed the majority of possession and turned up the pressure going forward  once Muniain came into the game. As the Basques began to really control the match they would finally be rewarded in the 58th minute when Gaizka Larrazabal was taken down in the box. A penalty was immediately given and Raúl García beat the goalkeeper from the spot to give Athletic a 1-0 lead.

Just when it seemed as though Athletic would be able to take all three points, Leganés struck back. The hosts were awarded a free kick at the top of the box and a shot beat Iago Herrerín to level the score with half an hour left to play. Nether side was able to find a late winner as the match ended 1-1 to secure an important point for Athletic.

Wednesday’s draw saw Athletic fall to third in the La Liga table and the Zurigorri will now turn their attention to Valencia who will visit San Mamés on Saturday. Athletic have won all three matches at home this season without conceding a single goal and will face yet another massive challenge this weekend as they look to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
