Gaizka Garitano “The Draw Is A Just And Positive Result”
Athletic continued their trend of drawing matches away from home on Wednesday when the Lions played Leganés to a 1-1 scoreline at Butarque. It was a very difficult game for the Zurigorri who were coming off of an intense Basque Derby days prior which also forced Gaizka Garitano to rotate the lineup. After the game the Mister explained that the draw was a fair result and is already turning the attention to Saturday’s match against Valencia.
“We would have liked to come and win 3-0, but it’s not easy. Every match is complicated in the Primera, the draw is fair. Leganés fought well. This is a positive point and we remain undefeated. Leganés had a great need to win. We dominated the game in the last 20 minutes, but early on it was very even. The draw is a just and positive result. Now we must rest and play in three days.”
Garitano surprised everyone when he named Iago Herrerín to the starting lineup. When asked about the decision, the manager stated that he wants both goalkeepers to have minutes. Garitano also confirmed that the plan was to bring on Iker Muniain in the second half.
“I want both goalkeepers to have chances. I have two good goalkeepers and I rewarded Iago because he deserves it. With three games this week I decided to play him. We intended to give Muniain some minutes. He finished the last game spent and wasn’t going to play 90 minutes. We wanted to give him 45 minutes and had planned for him to play the second half.”
Gaizka Larrazabal made his first start of the season and received Garitano’s praise after the game. The 21-year-old made his presence felt and will be getting more chances moving forward. With all four captain’s out of the lineup, Garitano revealed that it was his choice for Raúl García to wear the armband.
“Larrazabal was very involved. He is young and needs time, but we have confidence in the young players that we have. Taking off Larrazabal made it harder for us to find depth. Raúl wore the captain’s armband and that was my decision. He is the fifth captain behind, Aduriz, De Marcos, San José, and Muniain and they weren’t playing.”
Athletic have won every game at home this season, but have only managed draws on the road. “We’ve had three wins and three draws” Garitano responded when asked if there is a lack of consistency. “If anything, the team has the consistency of good results. If we won everything, home and away, we would be City but we’re not.” The Mister also refused to give any hints as to who will start Saturday’s match against Valencia. “We will see how the players are doing tomorrow. I will never say who will play.”
