Iñaki Williams And Iker Muniain Rested During Monday’s Training Session, Oscar De Marcos Rejoins The Group
Sunday was a day of celebration as Athletic defeated Alavés 2-0 to move to the top of the La Liga table. There’s plenty to be excited about but on Monday the festivities were over. The Lions will be traveling to Leganés on Wednesday and the team is already preparing for what will be another difficult match away from home. Playing three games in six days is always a challenge and it will be up to Gaizka Garitano to get the rotations right.
The players were back in training at Lezama on Monday with the starting lineup from Sunday’s match, along with Oihan Sancet, mainly jogging and doing recovery work. Iñaki Williams and Iker Muniain were both exhausted as they left the pitch against Alavés and were given the day off. The pair worked out inside the facilities and are expected to be back with the group on Tuesday.
Apart from those who featured against Alavés, the rest of the group enjoyed a regular training session led by Garitano which included games of 10 on 10. Oscar De Marcos was able to return to training and could feature this week, while Mikel San José worked separately as he’s still recovering from back pain. Antoni Salado, Jon Rojo, Javier Murua, Victor San Bartolomé, Asier Córdoba, Andoni Tascón, and Ander Iru of Bilbao Athletic all participated in the scrimmages.
Garitano refused to tip his hand after the Alavés win saying that he would wait to see how the players recover before making any decisions about who will travel to Leganés. Regardless of who misses out, Athletic will still be favorites to win at Butarque but going on the road in the middle of the week is never simple. A victory would see the Basques keep their place at the top of the table but anything else could see them drop several spots.
