Cristian Ganea Reportedly Turned Down Offers To Return To Romania Over The Summer
Before the preseason even began, Cristian Ganea publicly stated that he didn’t want to leave on loan again. The left-back felt as though he wouldn’t have the chance to prove himself to Gaizka Garitano by playing elsewhere, but when the players reported to Lezama on 4 July the manager informed Ganea that he wasn’t part of the plans. After weeks of looking for a loan partner, the transfer window closed with Ganea still an Athletic player.
Throughout the summer clubs such as Sporting and Malaga showed interest in signing Ganea but were unable to finalize a transfer due to financial restrictions. On 2 September, the final day of the transfer window, there was a chance that Ganea would be joining Tenerife with Isma López close to leaving. However, López never made his exit which left Ganea without the option.
Questions have been raised as to why Athletic didn’t consider pursuing a loan that would have seen Ganea return to Romania for the year, but new information reveals that was the case. According to an exclusive report from Javier Beltrán of AS, at least one club from Romania also tried to sign Ganea on the final day of the transfer window but the 27-year-old rejected the offer in order to stay and fight for his place at Athletic.
For now Ganea will stay at Athletic until January when the window reopens and the club will try once again to find a loan move. Until then, the Romanian has gotten his wish and will have the chance to fight for his place at San Mamés. It won’t be easy with Yuri Berchiche and Mikel Balenziaga both standing in his way, but Cristian Ganea is convinced that he can succeed at Athletic.
