Martin Agirregabiria “Wouldn’t Know What To Say” If Given The Chance To Join Athletic Club
Ander Capa has solidified himself as not only the starting right-back at Athletic, but arguably the very best in his position in La Liga. The 27-year-old has been in sensational form since Gaizka Garitano took over as manger and will be expected to continue playing at a high level for years to come. However, with Athletic’s unique player policy the club is always looking to add quality to make the squad even stronger.
Oscar De Marcos may be recovering from an ankle injury at the moment, but when healthy he will feature as the backup to Capa with Iñigo Lekue also capable of doing the same. Looking to the future, both Jon Sillero and Jesús Areso have looked promising with Bilbao Athletic and may soon get their chance with the first team. Capa is in the prime of his career right now but it’s also important for the club to be thinking ahead as well.
Athletic have been keeping a close eye on Alavés right-back Martin Agirregabiria since he made his first team debut back in 2017. Since then, the 23-year-old has also become one of the top players in La Liga at his position and was one of the stars for Spain’s U21 team that won the European Championship over the summer. Athletic’s desire to field the very best players from the Basque Country certainly makes Martin a target, though there has never been any formal contact with the player.
“If circumstances allow it then yes, of course, why not”, Martin answered when asked if he wants to be a One Club Man for Alavés in an interview with Javier Ortiz de Lazcano of El Correo. Lazcano followed up by asking, “does that mean you would say no if Athletic came calling?” to which Martin responded with a laugh.
“I wouldn’t know what to say”, Martin finally answered when asked what he would do if Athletic called him with an offer to move to San Mamés. “But today I’m very happy here. I’m happy and I feel important in the team which is important for every player.” Martin has been with Alavés since he joined the academy at 12 years old, however, his recent form and potential suggest that he won’t be there much longer.
Martin recently signed a renewal with Alavés which raised his release clause to €40 million. While it’s extremely unlikely that Athletic would ever entertain the idea of paying such a high fee, there’s always a chance that Alavés could be willing to accept a lower price due to the club’s overall financial limitations. Furthermore, many players have stipulations built into their contracts that significantly lower their clauses if their club is relegated which could be the case with Martin, though it is unknown at this time.
Whatever the future holds for Martin Agirregabiria, the right-back has incredible potential and the quality to become a very special player. Ander Capa has become an absolute star for Athletic, while Sillero and Areso could be the future, but the club is most certainly keeping a close eye on Martin. Athletic will host Alavés on Sunday at San Mamés in the second Basque Derby of the season.
