Athletic kept yet another clean sheet on Friday night as the Lions played Mallorca to a scoreless draw at Son Moix. In fact, the Basques haven’t trailed for a single second this season. Gaizka Garitano’s team have become one of the strongest defensive sides in all of Europe and Yeray has been a big reason for the success. The center-back told reporters after the game that the point was a good result, but admitted Athletic could have had more.

“We are leaving with a bittersweet feeling because we missed the penalty, but they also had many chances to take the victory.”, Yeray began. “We have to be happy for the point we are taking back to Bilbao. They created chances but we also had a few with Rulo, Gaizka, and the penalty. It was an even and crazy game.”

Before the game, Garitano pointed out that taking all three points would have seen Athletic go into the weekend at the top of the table. “We wanted to win in Mallorca and then win against Alavés”, Yeray answered when asked about it. “By winning both games we could separate a little more in the top positions. Now we just have to get ready for Alavés.”

Athletic had a clear chance to win the game in stoppage time when VAR awarded a penalty. However, Aritz Aduriz’s shot was saved by the keeper and some have claimed that the striker shouldn’t have taken the shot on the night he was being honored by his former club. “We can’t be upset with Aduriz for anything, the goalkeeper made a good save”, said Yeray who dismissed any notion that Aduriz shouldn’t have taken the shot.
