Gaizka Toquero “Aritz Aduriz Is Going To Be Missed, But Someone From The Academy Always Appears”
Now matter where Gaizka Toquero went during his footballing career the Lehendakari has always been beloved. Born in Vitoria, Toquero grew up at the Alavés academy before attracting the attention of Athletic while playing with Sestao River. The forward would join the Lions in 2008 where he was a fan favorite until leaving for Alavés in 2015. Toquero spent the last two years with Real Zaragoza before finally announcing his retirement.
“When I was at Sestao River I never could have imaged having a career like the one I’ve had”, Toquero recently told Fuera de Juego. “I’ve played in finals, I’ve played in the Champions League, and I’ve risen to the Primera. Not even in my best dreams could I have imagined it all. All the fans of the teams I have played for have always treated me very well. I have felt very loved.”
While Toquero will always have a special place in his heart for Athletic, Alavés is his boyhood club and the two sides will meet for the Basque Derby next weekend. “The Derby against Athletic Club will be difficult”, he explained. “Athletic are a strong team but Alavés isn’t going to make it easy either. They will be a tough opponent.”
Alavés will actually be holding a tribute for Toquero this Sunday against Sevilla to honor the forward who helped lead the team to the Primera a few years ago. “The tribute is very beautiful and it makes me very excited”, Toquero stated. It will be a special time to recognize the legend.
Throughout his career, Toquero has played with many great footballers including Aritz Aduriz who will be retiring at the end of the season as well. “Aritz Aduriz is going to be missed, but the same happened with Orbaiz, Gurpegui, and others”, Toquero explained when asked about Athletic losing the striker. “Someone from the academy always appears.”
