Yeray “I Want To Be Here My Entire Life”
Yeray pledged his future to Athletic over the summer by signing a new contract that will run through 2026. The defender made his first team debut back in 2016 and has quickly solidified his place as one of the best players in La Liga over the past few seasons. Naturally, there has been interest from other clubs but the 24-year-old has no plans to leave Athletic.
“I don’t care about offers, I want to be here my entire life”, Yeray told Fuera de Juego on Wednesday night’s radio show. “There is a lot of help and closeness in the team. We understand each other perfectly which is something that other teams don’t have.” Athletic didn’t sign any new players for the first team over the summer but that isn’t an issue to Yeray. “The best signings for Athletic are always from the academy”, he explained.
The Lions have built on their strong finish to last season and currently sit second in the La Liga table after the opening three matches. “It was time to arouse enthusiasm in the fans” continued the defender. “Last year was not good. This start is very exciting. We want to stay in UEFA and Champions League positions, We need to win in Mallorca for that to happen.”
Yeray’s fantastic partnership with Iñigo Martinez has brought immense success to Athletic but has also left Unai Núñez without regular minutes. All three defenders can play at a very high level and Yeray was quick to explain that the manger is the one who decides who will play. In the end, he doesn’t expect Núñez to leave the team anytime soon.
“Iñigo, Unai and I are all very similar defenders. The Mister is the one who decides. He knows what we all offer and what we can do. Unai has played great games. It is normal to be a bit frustrated if you don’t play but I think he will be here for many years. Every player wants to play but if the coach decides that I should go to the bench there are others who will perform.”
Athletic will have the chance to add three more points and potentially take the top spot in the table with a win over Mallorca on Friday night. Going on the road against a newly-promoted side is never easy and the Basques know that they will have to be at their best to leave Estadi de Son Moix with a positive result.
