Joseba Etxeberria “We Have To Improve In Many Aspects”
Bilbao Athletic suffered the first defeat of the season over the weekend, falling 5-2 on the road to Cultural Leonesa. From start to finish the Kumeak were thoroughly outplayed and manager Joseba Etxeberria didn’t shy away from poor performance when speaking with reporters. The Mister explained that the team failed to do things well and must now focus on improving.
“The assessment isn’t good”, Etxeberria began. “We were very far from what we want to be. We were very fragile without the ball, very soft, with little intensity. We lost the individual balls and we weren’t strong with the ball either. You have to learn from these moments. It’s clear that we made mistakes and we have to improve in many aspects.”
After surrendering an early goal, Bilbao Athletic were able to get back into the game when Oihan Sancet equalized. However, Cultural would regain the lead quickly and Etxeberria readily admitted that the hosts were the better side.
We were able to equalize with Sancet’s goal but then they scored again three minutes later. Had we had more time I believe we would have found ourselves more comfortable. Cultural played very well. It was a good test for us and it was clear that Cultural were far superior. We must correct mistakes and analyze the situations that caused this result. Everything has come together, our worst version and the best version of Cultural. They had yet to win a game and we knew they would come out with motivation to change that. We were the victims.”
Despite the disappointing result, the season has just started and Bilbao Athletic hope to be one of the teams competing for promotion. “We’ve only played three games but this result shows that we have to improve”, Etxeberria continued. “We took a big step backwards defensively. We knew the difficulty of this group and the level of the teams we would be facing. It suits us to see what our level is and for the growth of the players. After such a defeat there’s nothing left to do but continue working.” Bilbao Athletic will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Zalla for a friendly.
