Unai Nuñez Set To Resume Contract Negotiations With Athletic Club After International Break
Unai Nuñez’s future with Athletic Club is uncertain. The 22-year-old may still be under contract through 2023, but his current deal contains a release clause of only €30 million. After barely featuring last season the defender attracted interest from clubs in England and will only continue demanding attention after being called up to the Spain National Team.
Athletic has made it a priority to improve Nuñez’s contract with a much higher release clause and wages to match. The club made an initial offer to the Lezama product over the summer which was quickly rejected. Nuñez was said to be holding out for a better deal and both sides agreed to resume negotiations once the transfer window closed. There has been worry that the young defender wants to leave the club, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS, Nuñez’s goal is to stay at Athletic. The center-back is hoping that further negotiations will give him the contract that he wants so that he can continue his career at his boyhood club. There’s no denying the fact that Nuñez wants more consistent playing time and he’s hoping that can happen at Athletic instead of leaving San Mamés. At this point Nuñez is not looking to make an exit.
Athletic and Unai Nuñez will be picking back up negotiations in the coming days with the goal of reaching an agreement for a new contract. Both sides are hopeful that a deal can be reached soon, but there’s also no hurry with the January transfer window still months away. If the Lions can manage to qualify for Europe this season it will guarantee more playing time for the starlet, though the club must convince Nuñez that he’s an integral part of the team right now.
