Iñigo Lekue Eager To Earn Minutes After Making Season Debut In Win Over Toulouse
Iñigo Lekue made his season debut on Thursday, starting and playing most of the match in a 2-1 friendly win over Toulouse in Baiona. The 26-year-old has been sidelined since the start of the preseason due to a thigh injury but is now ready to get back on the field. Lekue played very well against Toulouse and explained after the game that he wants to earn more chances moving forward.
“I’ve had the bad luck that it happened to me all at once, all together, but now I’m available for whatever the Mister wants. He’s told me that he trusts me. Obviously I have to work and earn my minutes. From there it’s a thing between me and him. I will earn chances in training and by showing him that I’m well. I’m available 100%, I’ve fully recovered. Let’s see if I can forget these injuries. I was happy to play in the match and I’m satisfied with the work I’ve done.”
Speaking about his recent injury, Lekue explained that he was still able to work out normally but couldn’t risk suffering a blow during a challenge. Although he couldn’t train with the team he had no problem staying in shape for when he could finally return.
“It was an injury that allowed me to train a lot, but I had to avoid blows. I’ve spent almost the entire preseason training at a good level and I’ve been physically well. Now I just need to find those sensations, rhythm and that spark. I’ve had to overcome and when you are injured you only think of returning the same or better than when you left.”
Lekue has plenty of competition for minutes. Ander Capa currently playing at a very high level, though Oscar De Marcos’s recent injury could give the 26-year-old the opportunity to get back into the team. That being said, Lekue is certainly versatile which makes him even more valuable to the manager.
“Capa is very good and now De Marcos has had the bad luck of being injured, but I’m a versatile player. I can play in multiple positions, not just on the side of the defense. We’ll see what the Mister wants me to do.” If Lekue continues to play and train well he could be called up for next Friday’s trip to Mallorca.
