Ander Capa “I Set A Goal To Start Strong And That’s What I’ve Been Doing”
Athletic have enjoyed a fantastic start to the season, taking 7 out of a possible 9 points before heading into the international break. All three matches were difficult but the Lions have showed that they will be a force in La Liga this year. Ander Capa has been at the top of his game and recently explained to the media that the team has to be even better away from San Mamés.
“We have started well collectively from the first minute. The preseason was different from the previous one where we had a big physical load. We were drowned. Now it’s time to recharge the batteries during the break and go to Mallorca with everything to get the three points. We are comfortable at home and we’ve gone many games without defeat. We are comfortable and the fans help us a lot. We must continue to improve away from home and play well like we did against Getafe. You have to give more on the road and an extra gear.”
Capa has arguably been the best right-back in La Liga this season and leads the league with three assists. The 27-year-old admitted that he hasn’t done anything differently but was determined to start the year off well. He may not have been called up to the Spain National Team but that could change very soon.
“I don’t think I did anything different in the summer. A few weeks ago I was reminded that I had ups and downs during last season and that at the beginning I didn’t stand out much. I set a goal to start strong and that’s what I’ve been doing. I’m not doing anything different than last year, but now I’ve had the opportunities to give those assists. To be called up by the Selection would be fine because it’s the maximum level to which one can aspire, but the main thing is to continue working like I am.”
In closing, Capa highlighted his relationship with Gaizka Garitano as one of the big reasons why he’s played so well. The two worked together at Eibar and the right-back shared that he’s been given the confidence to play at the highest level.
“I am doing well under Garitano who knows me very well, what I can give and what he can ask of me. He gives me a lot of confidence. It’s not that we talk every day, but the last time we talked he told me I was the player that he has trained the most in his career. I’ve been able to give three assists because the strategy is very important and it’s something that we train and try to improve. So far there have been three, but I hope there are many more.”
When the international break comes to an end, Athletic will travel to newly-promoted Mallorca with hopes of picking up another important three points. The Zurigorri currently sit second in the La Liga table and are looking like early favorites to qualify for Europe at the end of the season.
