Unai Nuñez Waiting For Improved Contract Offer From Athletic Club
Unai Nuñez wants to continue his career at Athletic, but he also wants to play. After a disappointing season where he barely saw the field the 22-year-old is determined to prove that he deserves more minutes. Nuñez started the first two games of the season and performed at a very high level, though Iñigo Martinez’s return from injury saw the Lezama product back on the bench.
Other clubs have taken notice. With a release clause currently set at just €30 million, Nuñez would be a bargain in today’s market and Athletic have made it a priority to increase that price. The two sides spoke at the start of the summer and an offer was made, however it didn’t convince Nuñez who wanted to focus on the U21 championship. Once the defender joined the team for preseason training both agreed to wait until the transfer window closed to resume negotiations.
According to an exclusive report from Javier Ortiz de Lazcano of El Correo, Nuñez is currently waiting for an improved offer from Athletic. The two sides are expected to sit down soon to continue negotiations but there’s no date set at this point. Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta remains patient and is in no hurry to get a deal done but the club is adamant about raising Nuñez’s release clause which would also necessitate much higher wages to match.
Now that the transfer window has closed, Athletic don’t have to worry about Nuñez accepting an offer from another club. However, the club will need to be diligent to get a renewal deal in place before January in order to protect the 22-year-old’s future at San Mamés. Unai Nuñez was recently called up to the Spanish National Team and is proving to the world that his current fee would be a steal.
