Yuri Berchiche has been in excellent form since the start of the season. The 29-year-old was determined to take his game to the next level after a underwhelming campaign and has certainly done so to this point. Berchiche played a big role in Athletic’s 2-0 win over Real Sociedad and explained to reporters that it wasn’t just a normal victory.

“La Real had won the last three and whether you like it or not that’s a bit of a psychological blow. It’s not just another triumph, this victory will strengthen us a lot in the future. We played a fairly complete game, but I don’t think Real came out relaxed. You already know the atmosphere that awaits you here because the San Mamés will pressure you. San Mamés was at the same level as what we experienced against Barcelona. Hopefully every match will be like this because with this atmosphere it will be very difficult to lose.”

Athletic knew what to expect going into the match and Berchiche says that Real Sociedad did as well. Picking up three wins at home is always a big deal, but the left-back made it clear that the Lions haven’t accomplished anything yet and must take the season one game at a time.

“We already know what these matches bring and today everything went in our favor. Athletic has been the better team and we are happy to win at home. We have many goals, obviously, but the season is very long. There’s a long way to go and this is just the third game. Things can change quickly so you have to keep your feet on the ground. We aren’t thinking about the long term, the next objective is Mallorca. We are going to take small steps.”

In closing, Berchiche was asked about his improved form and agreed that he’s been much better to start his second season. However, he also recognizes that the campaign is just getting started and that the team has to continue getting better every day.

“I’ve been playing better but the season has just begun. We will analyze it after the season and I will say if it’s been better than last year. As far as the whole team, we have been very reliable and organized. The improvement is great because Athletic has been much better than lat year. We all know each other perfectly. We know what the coach wants from us and we are following it on the field.”

When the fixtures list was first announced, Athletic knew that they would face a massive challenge to start the season. Playing Barcelona, Getafe, and Real Sociedad could have really complicated things but the Zurigorri are going into the international break with 7 points and in terrific form. Once the league resumes, Athletic will travel to newly-promoted Mallorca with hopes of building on their roaring start.
