Unai Nuñez Called Up To The Spanish National Team For First Time
Unai Nuñez’s second season with the Athletic first team didn’t go as planned. After featuring in 36 matches the previous year, the defender only saw the field 14 times as Iñigo Martinez and Yeray cemented themselves as the starting duo in the backline. Despite the lack of chances there was never any question about Nuñez’s quality. The center-back was able to show his best over the summer with Spain U21 and started the La Liga season strong.
An injury to Iñigo Martinez during the preseason allowed Nuñez to start in Athletic’s opening two fixtures against Barcelona and Getafe. The 22-year-old was flawless in both matches and proved once again that he deserves more minutes this season. Nuñez’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed either. Along with attracting interest from the Premier League, the defender has been called up to the Spain National Team for the first time.
Nuñez is expected to make his debut with Spain at some point during the international break and his inclusion in the team is a great reward for hard work. The Lezama product may have not featured in Friday night’s Basque Derby but manager Gaizka Garitano made it clear after the game that he values Unai Nuñez highly and plans to give him more chances this season.
