Joseba Etxeberria “We Lacked That Goalscoring Instinct”
Bilbao Athletic looked to build on their opening win on Saturday when they welcomed Calahorra to Lezama, but a victory eluded the Kumeak. Despite being the better side and creating chances Joseba Etxeberria’s team were unable to find the elusive winning goal. The match ended in a scoreless draw but the manager was pleased with the overall performance.
“We have tried from the beginning to the end. We were very organized and fluid with the ball which helped us create chances, but we lacked that final hit and goalscoring instinct. It’s true that we did well with the ball on the outside but for some reason or other we couldn’t score. In general is was a hard game. They have good players who can create superiority on the inside, but we haven’t let them play like they usually do.”
Etxeberria admitted that the performance doesn’t look as good after a scoreless draw. However, he defended his players for fighting until the final seconds. Oihan Sancet and Dani Vivian continued to feature for Bilbao Athletic in order to get regular minutes.
“Many players have been at a good level but when you don’t score the work is distorted a bit, but the players emptied everything they have and we have to continue. We’ve only played two goals and the team has been solid. Sancet and Vivian are doing very well. They are players with the first team level and ones for the future. The idea of the club, both Gaizka and myself, is for them to accumulate minutes. Sancet had a serious injury last year and both will come in handy. They both have a very good predisposition to compete.”
Looking ahead to next weekend’s trip to Cultural Leonesa, Etxeberria hopes to have Juan Artola back from injury. Striker Ewan Urain likely won’t be cleared in time to play and it’s been difficult to manage with limited options in attack.
“I hope that we can have Juan Artola for the next game, although Ewan Urain is recovering slower. Zarraga has been playing wide because of the team’s needs. We don’t have anyone else or others to spare. Morcillo gave a good hour and Córdoba maintained that level once he came on. Cultural Leonesa is one of the favorites for the playoff. They have a lot of quality which will require us to be at our best to get a good result.”
Bilbao Athletic currently sit on 4 points in the league table and will look to pick up three more with the trip to Cultural Leonesa. Both clubs will be competing for promotion this season which makes the upcoming fixture one of the biggest games of the season.
