Iñaki Williams “We Played Very Well And The Reward Is Overwhelming”
Iñaki Williams set the stage for an intense Basque Derby with controversial statements in a press conference just days before. The striker said that Athletic should always win the fixture and that Real Sociedad should envy the club’s unique player policy. Such serious words brought even more drama to the match but the striker was able to back it up.
Just 11 minutes into the game Williams opened the scoring. The Lions would go on to win 2-0 at San Mamés and have secured 7 points ahead of the international break. “I’m very happy”, Williams told reporters after the game. “This is the feeling that we wanted to give, constant danger and being very intense. We have played very well and the reward is overwhelming.”
The striker also went on to explain that he never meant anything malicious with his statements, but stands by them regardless. “There’s been a lot of talk about my statements but I never meant to offend anymore”, he answered. “I stand by what I said and apologize if they bothered anyone. Let’s just enjoy the moment. We had a hard preseason, with a lot of work, and now we have to enjoy the moment that we’re in. We will go into the break and return stronger than ever.”
For the moment Athletic sit at the very top of the La Liga table having picked up 7 out of a possible 9 points. The Zurigorri have been playing extraordinary football and made it through a difficult opening round of fixtures with flying colors. A trip to Mallorca now awaits Athletic who will have the entire international break to prepare for their next match.
