Gaizka Garitano “It’s A Special Game That We All Want To Win”
The La Liga season may have just begun but Athletic have already been put through the fire. In the opening match the Lions managed to defeat Barcelona followed by a draw on the road against Getafe. Friday night they will host Real Sociedad for yet another important fixture. Manager Gaizka Garitano spoke to the media on Thursday and explained that San Mamés will play a big role in the outcome.
“It’s a special game that we all want to win. We are at home and we feel strong, but it will be a very difficult game against a great team. La Real has good players and also signed very well this summer. We will see who prevails. They are surely more concerned with doing things well themselves rather than worrying about us. It’s the same way with us.”
Athletic have yet to lose a league game at home under Garitano and it comes as no surprise. “We put a lot of intensity into our matches and at San Mamés we have been pressing opponents well”, explained the Mister. “Over the past few months we’ve shown that we are a strong team. We will have to do things very well to impose ourselves.”
It’s been an exciting start to the season for the Zurigorri but the team can’t start to relax. “We’re at the beginning of the league and there is much to improve”, Garitano said firmly. “We still have a long way to go and a lot to improve. I’m going game by game. We have played two of the most difficult teams in the league and we want to win the Derby, which is a very import game. In football the goals are weekly and beyond that we aren’t thinking of anything else.” Athletic have a squad capable of fighting for Europe, but right now the only thing that matters is winning Friday’s Derby.
